Description :

“Way of the Blossom II” is a sumi‑e collage by Judy Kalin, blending traditional ink‑brush technique with expressive contemporary elements. Bare winter trees rise in delicate black linework, contrasted by bold, gestural strokes and soft bursts of pink blossom layered across the foreground. The interplay of monochrome structure and vibrant color creates a sense of renewal emerging from stillness—an elegant balance of restraint and spontaneity that reflects the core philosophy of sumi‑e. The piece is presented with a clean white mat and black frame, emphasizing its modern, meditative character.

Artist Bio — Judy Kalin

Judy Kalin is a contemporary Northwest artist known for her sumi‑e paintings, ink collages, and Asian‑influenced brushwork. Her work emphasizes gesture, negative space, and the expressive spirit of natural subjects—branches, blossoms, stones, and organic forms rendered with both discipline and freedom.

Kalin studied fine art through regional programs and private instruction, grounding her practice in traditional East Asian brush techniques while developing a distinctly modern voice. Her work has been exhibited in Pacific Northwest galleries, juried shows, and curated sumi‑e exhibitions, and is held in private collections throughout the region. Collectors value her ability to merge classical sumi‑e philosophy with contemporary composition, creating pieces that feel both serene and alive.
