Description :

Roman Republic Silver Denarius — Roma & Galloping Biga (c. 150–100 BCE)

Obverse: Helmeted bust of Roma facing right, wearing winged or crested helmet; dotted border.

Reverse: Horseman driving a galloping biga (two-horse chariot) right, holding reins and spear/staff; partial moneyer’s inscription M·IIII… in exergue.

Metal: Silver

Diameter: Approx. 18–19 mm

Highlights:

  • Classic mid-Republican silver denarius with dynamic chariot scene

  • Well-centered Roma portrait from hand-engraved dies—each coin uniquely struck

  • Partial inscription suggests issue by Marcus Iunius or Marcus Iulius

  • Even grey toning; moderate wear; horse and chariot details remain clear

  • Edges sound; flan complete

Collecting Insight: Struck during a pivotal era of Roman coinage, this denarius reflects the Republic’s evolving iconography and craftsmanship. Coins like this circulated widely across the Mediterranean and laid the groundwork for later imperial issues.
