Description :
Varity of vintage folk art items. Intricate pen-drawn ornamental bird with amazing flourishes - client believes the piece to be from late 1800s. Frame definitely shows its age, but could easily be restored or replaced as the artwork it frames is exquisite - this is an exemplary image in wonderful shape. Measures 19" H x 22" W. 2 small pieces cut from a larger calligraphic pen-drawn work. Client purchased with cardboard insert noting that the pieces were from an 1877 larger work and were given in memory of someone. Tiny rendering of an alpine scene in what we believe to be a graphite. White paper measures 2.5" H x 4" W glued on grey mat that measures 3.75" H x 5.75" W. "Ornamental Pen Designs and Flourishes" guidebook to this genre of folk art edited by Carol Belanger Grafton (1996). Great guide for exploring the techniques and variety of pen art. Vintage red & white quilt-top out of what appears to be very thin broad-cloth. Although machine-sewn, it is obviously hand-assembled as evidenced by slight variations throughout. It shows its age but is in good condition with no egregious holes or flaws noticed except general discoloration from being stored for many years. We believe a gentle wash with Persil or Oxyclean would probably make it look fabulous again. Measures approx. 92" L x 79" W. Client says she does not know the origin, but it was given to her by her employer who collected antique quilts. NOTE: for those of you wondering, this is NOT a "Nazi" quilt - the swastika symbol has been used in design for over 5,000 years by many cultures and had positive connotations in most until the National Socialists appropriated the symbol during WW2. We believe this piece was made pre-WW2 and was just a beautifully intricate geometric design for its maker.
