Artist Bio — Danny Mayes

Danny Mayes is a Pacific Northwest painter born in Tacoma, Washington, known for his expressive acrylic and watercolor depictions of regional life, coastal landscapes, and everyday scenes of the Northwest and Alaska. His work is instantly recognizable for its bold, intuitive brushwork, strong color contrasts, and dynamic sense of movement.

Mayes studied at the Burnley School of Commercial Art in Seattle—later known as the Art Institute of Seattle—where he trained under noted Northwest artist William Cumming, a key figure of the Northwest School. This foundation shaped Mayes’ confident line work, gestural figures, and ability to capture atmosphere with economy and energy.

His paintings have been exhibited in respected regional venues, most notably the Kirsten Gallery in Seattle, which represented his work for many years. His art has also been included in numerous Pacific Northwest group shows and private exhibitions.
