Description :

“The Chenega”is an original watercolor by Steve Mayo, depicting the powerful presence of the vessel as it cuts through turbulent seas under a brooding sky. Mayo’s controlled washes and layered tonal work capture the drama of open water—cresting waves, wind‑driven spray, and the determined forward motion of the ship. His maritime precision, combined with atmospheric color shifts, gives the piece both realism and emotional weight, reflecting the grit and resilience of working vessels in harsh conditions.

Artist Bio — Steve Mayo (American, b. 1950s)

Steve Mayo is an American maritime painter and illustrator known for his detailed, historically grounded depictions of ships, naval vessels, and working waterfronts. His work emphasizes accuracy, atmosphere, and the dynamic relationship between sea and vessel.

Mayo studied fine art and illustration through regional programs and private mentorships, developing a technique rooted in traditional watercolor practice and maritime draftsmanship. His paintings have been exhibited in Northwest galleries, maritime museums, and juried nautical art shows, and his illustrations have appeared in publications focused on naval history and Pacific Coast maritime culture.

Collectors value Mayo’s work for its technical precision, strong sense of place, and the authenticity he brings to maritime subjects—qualities that make his pieces especially resonant in coastal regions.
