Artist Bio — Richard Kirsten‑Daiensai (1920–2013)

Richard Kirsten‑Daiensai was a Seattle‑based painter, printmaker, sculptor, and Zen Buddhist priest whose work blends spiritual reflection with playful, symbolic imagery. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Washington, later serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, he worked as an editorial artist for the Seattle Post‑Intelligencer and eventually founded the Kirsten Gallery in Seattle’s University District.

Beginning in the late 1950s, Kirsten‑Daiensai spent months each year in Japan and Korea, drawing inspiration from Buddhist temples, shrines, and contemplative daily rituals. His art is known for its joyful figures, cosmic themes, and gentle, philosophical tone—often exploring love, gratitude, and the interconnectedness of all living things.

His works are held in collections across the U.S. and Asia, including the Seattle Art Museum and the Library of Congress.
