Description :
Late‑19th‑century Regal mandolinetto, produced during the company’s early Chicago era when Regal was known for small‑body bowl backand flat‑back mandolin variants with distinctive hardware and hand‑finished appointments. This example retains its original metal tailpiece stamped “PAT. OCT. 26. 86”, a patent date associated with late‑Victorian mandolin tailpiece designs used by several Chicago makers of the period. The hardware, bridge area, and body proportions align with Regal’s pre‑1900 construction style. The instrument features a naturally aged finish with visible playwear, scratches, and handling marks consistent with 140+ years of use. The top, back, and sides show attractive grain patterns typical of Regal’s early tone woodselection. Neck, headstock, and fretboard display expected wear from long-term handling. Metal components show age‑appropriate patina and appear original to the instrument. This mandolinetto is offered as found from the estate—an appealing candidate for restoration, display, or inclusion in a historical instrument collection. Collector‑Focused Technical Notes: –Early Regal production, consistent with Chicago‑made instruments of the 1880s– Tailpiece stamped PAT. OCT. 26. 86, aligning with late‑Victorian mandolin hardware patents– Period‑correct body shape and wood selection– Original metal hardware with natural patina– Appealing example of Regal’s early craftsmanship prior to their large‑scale 20th‑century expansion Condition Notes: –Surface wear, scratches, and finish loss throughout– Hardware shows patina and age– No repairs observed, but may require setup or restoration – Sold as‑is
