Description :

Laughing Budai Statue Fiberglass Composite

A very heavy joyful representation of Budai (Hotei in Japanese), the folkloric Laughing Buddha known for his cheerful demeanor and symbolic attributes. This standing figure features:

  • A broad, welcoming smile

  • Mala prayer beads in hand

  • A cloth sack slung over his shoulder

  • A small vessel held in the other hand

Crafted from fiberglass composite—a blend of resin and fiberglass cloth—for durability and lightness. Finished in a gray-green stone-effect patina, evoking the look of aged carved stone. Estimated to be produced in the late 20th century.

Material & Finish:

  • Material: Resin reinforced with fiberglass

  • Finish: Stone-like patina in gray-green tones

Collecting Note

Budai is celebrated across East Asia as a symbol of happiness, abundance, and good fortune. His rotund belly, prayer beads, and ever-present sack reflect generosity and carefree joy. Though not the historical Buddha, Budai embodies the spirit of contentment and prosperity in Buddhist folklore and popular culture. Statues like this are often placed in homes or businesses to invite luck, wealth, and joy.
