Description :
Pair of Japanese Kutani Porcelain Shishi Foo Dog Guardian Lions A finely detailed pair of Japanese Kutani porcelain Shishi (Foo Dog / Guardian Lion) figures, richly decorated with vibrant enamels and gold accents. Each guardian lion is depicted with a fierce expression, swirling manes, and dynamic curling tails highlighted in gilt.
One figure rests its paw on an openwork sacred jewel (宝珠, hōju) orb, painted in red and gold with a cutout motif and adorned with a silk red tassel. Both lions hold a decorative element in their mouths, further symbolizing protection and prosperity.
The pair represents the traditional A-Un (阿吽) guardians—one with its mouth open (“A”) and the other closed (“Un”)—symbolizing the cosmic beginning and end.

Shishi (also known as Foo Dogs or Guardian Lions) are traditional protectors in Japanese and Chinese culture, believed to ward off evil and bring good fortune. Pairs such as these were commonly placed at temple entrances, shrines, and later in homes, serving both decorative and symbolic purposes. Kutani porcelain guardian lions with detailed enameling and gold highlights are especially sought after by collectors.
