Description :
Pair of Handwoven Baskets – Possibly Tlingit, Late 19th–Early 20th Century This lot includes two finely woven baskets, both featuring distinct traditional patterns and construction techniques that align with Northwest Coast Native American artistry, particularly the Tlingit. Era: Late 19th–Early 20th century (based on style and comparison) Material: Natural plant fibers with dyed decoration Designs: Basket 1 (larger): Zigzag/diamond motifs in black on a natural base. Basket 2 (smaller): Stepped geometric bands in golden and russet hues, closely resembling documented Tlingit examples. Measurements: Approx. 4.5"–6" tall × 6"–8" wide Condition: Both show typical age-related wear, including slight warping and fraying along the rims, but remain structurally sound. Value Note: Documented antique Tlingit baskets of similar size and design have sold in the $400–$600 range (see reference image). Together, these two baskets represent excellent examples of Native American weaving and artistry. Historical Note: The Tlingit people of the Pacific Northwest are renowned for their basketry, traditionally woven by women using spruce root and grass. Patterns often carried cultural meaning and were used in both daily life and ceremonial contexts. The stepped geometric designs, like those on the smaller basket, are especially characteristic of Tlingit weaving traditions.
