Description :

Lew Wallace – The Prince of India; or, Why Constantinople Fell – First Edition, 1893

First edition of Lew Wallace’s sweeping two-volume historical romance, The Prince of India, published in 1893 by Harper & Brothers (New York). Best known as the author of Ben-Hur, Wallace here turns his imagination to the fall of Constantinople in 1453, weaving themes of faith, empire, and destiny into an ambitious narrative.

Details:

  • Author: Lew Wallace (1827–1905)

  • Title: The Prince of India; or, Why Constantinople Fell

  • Edition: First Edition, 1893

  • Publisher: Harper & Brothers, New York

  • Binding: Original mustard cloth with red stamped title panel and ruled borders

  • Size: Approx. 7.5" tall × 5.25" wide × 2" thick

Condition: Good overall. Cloth shows age toning and surface wear, with light soiling and softening at corners and spine ends. Hinges tender but intact, pages clean with moderate toning typical of 19th-century paper.

Why Collectible:
As Wallace’s final major work following Ben-Hur, this first edition is significant both as a product of the 19th century’s fascination with historical epics and as a testament to Wallace’s enduring place in American literary history. Its bold original cloth binding makes it an attractive addition to any library of antiquarian fiction.
