Description :

Lew Wallace – The Fair God – First Edition, 1873 – Houghton Mifflin

Rare first edition of The Fair God: The Last of the ‘Tzins, the debut novel of Lew Wallace, better known as the author of Ben-Hur. Published in 1873 by Houghton Mifflin and Company (Boston), this historical romance is set during the Spanish conquest of Mexico and showcases Wallace’s literary flair that would later bring him international acclaim.

Details:

  • Author: Lew Wallace (1827–1905)

  • Title: The Fair God: The Last of the ‘Tzins

  • Edition: First Edition, 1873

  • Publisher: Houghton Mifflin and Company

  • Binding: Original brown cloth with gilt lettering and decorative emblem on spine and front board

  • Size: Approx. 8.25" tall × 5.5" wide × 1.5" thick

Condition: Good antique condition. Rubbing and wear to cloth at spine ends and corners, faint spotting on boards, and some surface marks to gilt. Interior pages show expected age toning, but remain clean and legible. Binding is intact.

Why Collectible:
As Wallace’s first published work, The Fair God offers early insight into the narrative style and dramatic historical imagination that would later define Ben-Hur. First editions are increasingly scarce and sought after, especially in original publisher’s cloth.
