Description :

A traditional Chinese hand-crafted wedding basket, known as a dou he (斗盒), finely constructed in wood and finished in deep red lacquer with gilt-painted floral and calligraphic motifs. The domed lid is adorned with auspicious symbols—including stylized longevity characters and a central geometric medallion—representing happiness, unity, and enduring prosperity.

This ceremonial vessel includes a removable shallow dish insert, lacquered in matching reddish-brown tones with a polished surface. The double-handle is wrapped for reinforcement, suggesting practical use during wedding gift presentations. Age-related wear, surface cracks, and patina contribute to its authenticity and charm.

Set Includes:

  • Lacquered lidded wedding basket with double handle

  • Matching removable lacquered dish insert

Dimensions: Approx. 15" L × 18" W

Provenance: Likely southern China, early 20th century; acquired from a private estate collection.

Collector’s Note: These baskets were traditionally used to present symbolic gifts—fruits, sweets, or textiles—during betrothal ceremonies. Today, they serve as evocative decorative pieces or conversation-starting collectibles that reflect Chinese folk traditions and craftsmanship.
