Description :

Welsh Miner's Lamp, also known as a Davy lamp or Cambrian lamp. These lamps were invented by Sir Humphry Davy in 1815 for use in coal mines to detect flammable gases and a lack of oxygen, thereby preventing explosions. The lamp's design incorporates internal safety gauzes that act as flame arrestors, regulating the flow of atmosphere and preventing the flame from igniting external flammable gases like "firedamp" (methane). The flame also changes color when flammable gases are present and extinguishes when oxygen levels are too low. While based on Davy's original design, the lamp in the image is a modern replica, handcrafted in Aberdare, South Wales, by descendants of miners. The original lamps were crucial safety tools during the Industrial Revolution. This lamp is made of solid brass and designed for ornamental use, although authentic safety lamps based on this design are still used in various industrial settings. It typically burns lamp oil or paraffin.
Dimensions : 3 1/2 inches in L x 9 1/2 inches in H
