Description :

Pass Through the Mountains, Mt. Utsu by Fukaye Roshu – Framed Print

Framed horizontal art print depicting a traditional Japanese scene attributed to Fukaye Roshu. The composition shows figures and horses in a mountainous landscape with trees, water, and layered terrain. The print is housed in a wooden frame with mottled finish and gold inner trim. Wire attached at the back for hanging. Marked “Larson-Juhl” along the inner frame.

This elegant framed artwork is a reproduction of Pass Through the Mountains, Mt. Utsu, originally created by the Japanese artist Fukaye Roshu, known for his contributions to Edo-period Yamato-e painting—a classical style rooted in Heian-era courtly aesthetics. Roshu’s works are celebrated for their lyrical quality, delicate brushwork, and narrative depth.

The scene captures a poignant moment inspired by The Tale of Ise (Ise Monogatari), a cornerstone of classical Japanese literature. In this episode, the protagonist travels through Mt. Utsu, a symbolic setting associated with longing, separation, and poetic reflection. Artists of Roshu’s time often depicted this journey to explore themes of impermanence and emotional subtlety.

The composition reflects a harmonious balance of nature and humanity, with refined figures set within stylized mountains, flowing water, and clouded sky. This particular piece holds cultural resonance not only for its beauty but for its embodiment of mono no aware—the Japanese aesthetic of gentle sorrow and fleeting moments.

A circular red seal is present on the reverse, likely identifying the publisher or workshop that issued the print.

Note: This is a reproduction print, not an original oil painting.
