Description :

A handsome Seth Thomas mantel clock with warm amber-brown coloring, decorative columns and ornate gold-tone fittings. Dark scrolling designs across the front complement the lion-head side ornaments and shaped feet, giving this antique clock a welcoming presence on a mantel, bookshelf or sideboard. Exemplary of early 20th-century American classical revival style.

Details

  • Seth Thomas mantel clock, likely dating to around 1900
  • Wood case with a glossy wood-grain-effect finish consistent with the company’s Adamantine clocks.
  • Four decorative columns with pale, marble-like finishes and ornate metal capitals and bases.
  • Gold-tone metal feet, lion-head side ornaments and embossed dial surround.
  • Cream-colored dial with black Arabic numerals, two winding openings and a hinged glass-front bezel.
  • Mechanical pendulum movement with a striking mechanism.
  • Rear access door embossed with the S.T. trademark; paper instructions label remains on the back.
  • Includes the winding key and pendulum shown.

Measurements

  • Approximately 16.5" W × 6.25" D × 11.5" H.

Highlights

  • A collectible example of the architectural mantel clocks associated with Seth Thomas at the turn of the 20th century.
  • Decorative case finishes imitate richer materials without the weight of a solid marble case.
  • Surviving maker’s label, trademarked rear door and accompanying key add to its historical interest.

Condition

Antique condition with scratches, small finish losses and wear around the case edges. Metal fittings have tarnish and finish wear, and the dial shows spotting and discoloration. The rear label is aged and worn but remains attached. Running, timekeeping and striking have not been tested. A clockmaker’s inspection and servicing are recommended before regular use.
