Description :

OK, this one is a mystery. We understand that a copy of "Twelve Original Woodcuts by Roger Fry" is a phenomenal find. The book had a limited publishing run via Bloomsbury's Hogarth Press* - only 150 copies of the first edition were published in 1921, each hand-printed by Leonard & Virginia Woolf. This appears to be one of those 150. However, at some point the actual prints were excised from this book - they were all sliced away behind the print's red-text title page that preceded each image. The booklet's overall title page is still here as is the list of Hogarth Press publications on the inside back cover. The original OOAK  hand-marbled covers are here, too, albeit in less than terrific shape. The front cover has become detached as has the interior sewn section - client held them inside the frame with pins and we have left it that way. The back cover is fastened to the backing board.

Given that our client was a Virginia Woolf scholar, we are guessing that our client found the book, even in its condition missing the illustrations, to be an exquisite piece of history in that each book was not only printed by Leonard & Virginia, but they were also sewn together by Woolf**. Thus, the stitching on the spine (which is still here) would have been done by Woolf's own hands. The frame the book was placed in was the same as that of an original Duncan Grant drawing the client owned, so this was obviously a special book for her despite its missing sections.

Book measures 9" H x 6.5" W. Total measurement framed is 19" H x 16" W (note that there is no glass because of the pins)

Here's one of the original books in case you are curious about the what the missing prints looked like: Roger Fry Book

*Bloomsbury was a group of authors, artists, and intellectuals in the early 20th C in England. Members included Vanessa Bell, Virginia & Leonard Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, E.M. Forster, Roger Fry and numerous others who often published with the group's Hogarth Press imprint.

**Woolmer quotes: 'Virginia Woolf in her diary entry for the 25th of November 1921 states : Roger's woodcuts, 150 copies, have been gulped down in two days. I have just finished stitching the last copies all but six. By the way, Rogers (sic) cover paper was not designed by Carrington; I get it from a little man in Holborn; it is clearly an imitation of the Kew Gardens cover'
