Description :
Two handcrafted folk art ceramics from Michoacán, created using the regional pastillage technique in which individually modeled clay elements are applied to the vessel before glazing. This traditional method—rooted in long‑standing Indigenous and mestizo ceramic practices of western Mexico—produces richly textured surfaces and sculptural ornamentation that define much of the area’s pottery. The lidded jar features an allover applied leaf motif in a deep green glaze, with a warm red clay body visible on the interior and underside. Its lid is topped with two sculpted leaves forming the handle, continuing the organic, nature‑inspired vocabulary characteristic of Michoacán artisans. The accompanying vase echoes the same hand‑built aesthetic, showcasing applied decorative elements and glaze variation consistent with small‑workshop production. Both pieces reflect the expressive qualities associated with Michoacán folk ceramics: layered glaze pooling, tactile surfaces, and individually formed embellishments that highlight the maker’s hand. Underside markings on the jar include hand‑inscribed symbols typical of independent studio or family‑based workshops. Condition
Two small chips on the lidded jar are present and have been photographed. No cracks observed on either piece. Surface variations and irregularities are consistent with handmade folk art pottery.
Dimensions : 6 in W x 6-8 in H
