Description :

The Ascent” is a dramatic and contemplative work by Rob Schouten, depicting a lone traveler climbing a stone path toward a towering, snow‑covered peak. The figure—small in scale compared to the immense mountain—carries a long, wrapped object and wears traditional garments, emphasizing the sense of pilgrimage or purposeful journey.

The moon hangs in a deep, dark sky, casting a cool glow across the landscape and heightening the mystical atmosphere. Schouten’s composition uses scale masterfully: the monumental mountain rises sharply, its ridges illuminated in crisp whites and blues, while the foreground path and figure anchor the viewer in the human experience of striving, endurance, and spiritual ascent.

The piece blends realism with symbolic undertones, a hallmark of Schouten’s work, creating a scene that feels both grounded in nature and elevated by metaphor.

Short Artist Bio — Rob Schouten (Dutch‑American, b. 1953)

Rob Schouten is a Dutch‑born, Whidbey Island–based painter and printmaker known for his luminous, symbolic landscapes and spiritually infused imagery. After immigrating to the United States in the 1970s, he became a central figure in the Pacific Northwest art community, exhibiting widely and co‑founding the Rob Schouten Gallery at Greenbank Farm.

His work often blends realism with dreamlike or metaphysical elements—mountains, moons, pathways, guardians, and solitary figures—inviting viewers into quiet narratives of transformation, contemplation, and inner journey. Schouten works in oil, acrylic, and mixed media, and his pieces are held in private and public collections throughout the region.
