Description :

This set of three vintage coin banks offers a unique blend of mid-century promotional design and historical significance. Each bank is made of cast metal, giving them a sturdy, timeless quality ideal for display or collection. These pieces reflect the legacy of two American financial institutions with deep community roots.

Included in this set:

  • Capital Savings Bank #1492: Rectangular cast metal bank with embossed detailing. Marked “1492” on the underside. Measures approx. 6.6" L × 3.5" W × 5" H. Note: The coin slot piece has detached but is included with the lot.

  • Capital Savings Bank #1495: Nearly identical to #1492 with slight design variations. Marked “1495” on the underside. Measures approx. 6.6" L × 3.5" W × 5" H.

  • Conneaut Savings and Loan Car Bank: Cast metal bank shaped like a classic car, marked for Conneaut S&L. Measures approx. 7" L × 3" W × 3.5" H.

Condition: All banks show light wear consistent with age. The #1492 bank has a detached coin slot (included); the other two are intact and functional. Stoppers are present and secure. No cracks or structural damage.

Historical Significance:

  • Capital Savings Bank was founded in 1888 in Washington, D.C. and was the first African American–owned and operated bank in the United States. It played a vital role in financing Black-owned businesses and property ownership during the post-Reconstruction era. Though it closed in 1902, its legacy inspired the founding of many other Black-owned banks across the country.

  • Conneaut Savings and Loan was also established in 1888 in Conneaut, Ohio. Originally named Conneaut Savings and Loan Company, it served the financial needs of its local community for decades. The car-shaped promotional bank reflects the mid-20th-century trend of banks offering branded keepsakes to encourage savings and customer loyalty.

Highlights:

  • Cast metal construction for durability and vintage appeal

  • Two matching Capital Savings banks with mold numbers

  • Rare Conneaut S&L car-shaped bank

  • Historically significant institutions

  • Sold as a complete set

A distinctive addition to any vintage bank, advertising, or Americana collection.
